The European early stage investment community gathered in Moscow on 23-24 April 2012 to debate sector trends and challenges with the support of a world-class panel of speakers.

The Congress was the key event of the First Russian Business Angels Week took place on 23-27 April 2012 across 26 regions spread from Irkutsk (Lake Baikal area) to Saint-Petersburg and provided opportunities for discussion, education and investment aimed at the development of the Russian early stage VC market. The most significant events were the 7th Kazan Venture Fair in the Republic of Tatarstan, International Assembly of Business Angels in Saint Petersburg, International Symposium on the Russian early stage VC market development in Nizhny Novgorod, the 4th Urals Venture Forum in Chelyabinsk and a wide range of other regional events in Vologda, Irkutsk, Kirov, Lipetsk, Moscow, Novosibirsk, Ryazan, Samara, Saratov, Tomsk, Yaroslavl regions, Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Republic of Mordovia and other regions. The total number of participants was over 5,000 people. Each event has made a significant step to the development of the Russian early stage VC market and EBAN's 12th Congress provided a special opportunity to boost Russia's efforts in developing a strong national business angel market.

Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the Board of RUSNANO, Brigitte Baumann, President of the European Business Angel Network, Konstantin Fokin, President of the National Business Angels Association of Russia took part in the opening ceremony of the Congress.

In his speech to the opening of the Congress Konstantin Fokin, NBAA President, brought into focus the excellent opportunity to see each other and become visible for the society due to the EBAN Congress. В«Every year business angels invest in young businesses about 100 billion dollars in the whole world, said Mr. Fokin, that`s 90% of all the investment in early stage businesses. The presence of angels in startups increases the possibility of the success of businesses up to 4 times. Our common goal is to increase the volume of investment from Russian angel investors in Russian companies to $1billion in 3-5 years.В»

Anatoly Chubais, Chairman of the Board of RUSNANO, remarked that from the very beginning the Russian VC market should be integrated in the international one and act according to its best practices. The Congress provided excellent opportunities for networking, establishing direct business contacts and experience sharing.

The keynote address made by Esther Dyson, Chairman of EDventure and director of Yandex, set the proper tone to the Congress. Drawing on her extensive experience, Esther highlighted several important aspects of entrepreneurship and cautioned against making common mistakes.

As part of the core programme of the Congress panel discussions and breakout sessions on entrepreneurship issues and early stage venture investment were held.

Particular attention was paid to Shared Deals Competition: exclusively EBAN members could submit the deals that had already received a first investment through the network and which were then looking for a second and international round of funding. The international jury and investors were presented an unprecedented number of Russian projects: Angelic Sphere (St. Petersburg), AVATAR (Saratov), Vite.me (Moscow), Video Follower (Chelyabinsk), Clip Clock (Moscow), as well as projects from Italy, Turkey and Portugal. Italian Super Compare presented by Risparmio Super was awarded as the most promising project deserving the second round of funding.
